1984 - Renault 5 Turbo 2 - Lot 57
1984 - Renault 5 Turbo 2 Turbo magic in a stylish city car at its best French registration Chassis n°VF1822000E0001201 - Road-going sports car built for competition, with radical lines - One of only 3167 Turbo 2s produced - In the same hands for 10 years, with roll bar and bucket seats - Cevennes-type mechanical optimization by 3S Développement - Original parts and accessories supplied, tripmaster pre-equipped - Car tested and signed by Bruno Saby in 2020 Launched at the Brussels Motor Show in 1980, the R5 Turbo was born with the aim of offering competition cars to the public for homologation purposes only. Certain rally categories, such as FIA Group 3 and Group 4, required manufacturers to offer their cars to the public. The R5 Turbo was developed by Ateliers Renault Sport in Dieppe. While it benefited from the R5 Alpine's 1397 cm3 engine block, it had little in common with the posh version of the vitamin-packed little city car. The engine was moved to the rear mid-engine position and became a real racing beast, benefiting from the advantages of a Garett T3 turbo: in the 1980s, supercharging was a must. The R5 Turbo impresses with its design, styling and performance. Weighing less than a ton on the scales, it is a racy sports car capable of reaching 100 km/h in 6 seconds and exceeding 200 km/h. Renault thus demonstrated its expertise and mastery of supercharging, and the R5 Turbo went on to win countless rallies. A second version, the Turbo 2, appeared at the 1982 Paris Motor Show. It was mechanically identical to the Turbo "1", but borrowed more elements from the production R5 in order to reduce costs, which were astronomical for the time: a Turbo 2 still cost 95,000 francs. In all, only 1,690 R5 Turbos and 3,167 Turbo 2s were produced between 1980 and 1985. Our original French Renault 5 Turbo 2 was launched in December 1984. Bright red with black-tinted windows, matching lettering and body-colored obus mirrors, this car is a superb representative of the 1980s: bold and impressive. With 98500 kms on the odometer, it has been delighting its owner for over 10 years. Just a few years ago, it passed through the 3S Développement garage, which has made maintenance and preparation of R5 Turbo cars its specialty. The cylinder head gasket was replaced as a preventive measure, with cylinder head facing carried out to make the block more reliable, and the engine benefited from a thorough mechanical optimization, of the "Cévennes" type, in order to develop a power output of around 200 hp. Work included replacement of the turbocharger, camshaft, cylinder liners, segmentation, valves and valve springs, pistons, connecting rods, etc. Injection, fuel pump, intake hoses and clutch were also changed, and a large-volume aluminum radiator was installed. The suspension was also modified with the installation of Group 4 wishbones and Bilstein threaded combination shock absorbers. The interior benefits from an optional Renault Sport 6-point bolt-on roll bar and has been fitted with two Oreca bucket seats with harnesses, although the original seats are supplied with the car. In fact, all the parts changed and replaced as part of the work carried out at 3S Développement still accompany this R5 Turbo 2, which is also sold with 4 Tramons three-piece wheels mounted on tires and an additional set of TRX tires. It also features a tripmaster pre-equipment package to help it exploit its full potential in competition, and is also ready to receive an additional headlight cluster. This Renault 5 Turbo 2 was also tested at the Ronde historique des Alpes in 2020 by Bruno Saby, a connoisseur of the model as an official Renault Elf driver during his racing career and the 1981 French Rally Champion in a Renault 5 Turbo. Satisfied with his demonstration of this well-tuned car, as a token of thanks to the owner, he also affixed his signature to the driver's door. The car was sold without a technical inspection, but this was a mere formality, since it was ready to go and in impeccable cosmetic condition, irresistible to any enthusiast. Now a collector's item, the R5 Turbo is particularly sought-after, and the excitement surrounding the release of the recently relaunched R5 only enhances the appeal of the old one, whose
