The Alpine A110 is nothing less than one of the legends of the French automobile. After 1945, the French car industry was largely confined to popular cars, and never really reinvested in the sports car sector after the Second World War, apart from a few attempts such as those by René Bonnet. Once again, the Alpine adventure was the brainchild of an unheralded engineer: Jean Rédélé. Originally a Renault dealer in Dieppe with a passion for motor sport, he gradually became a factory rally driver, taking 4CVs to the most prestigious competitions of the 1950s, such as the Mille Milles, the 12 Hours of Sebring and the Monte Carlo. Then came the time to develop his own cars: Jean Rédélé created the Alpine brand in 1955. After several prototypes, then the A106 based on the 4CV and the A108 based on the R8, the A110 designed by Michelotti was presented at the 1962 Paris Motor Show. Rédélé designed an entirely new car: the berlinette. True to his belief that a high-performance car should above all be light and agile in order to make the most of its power, the A110 featured a beam chassis with rear engine overhang, and a fiberglass body - a rarity at the time. In 1965, Rédélé joined forces with Renault, benefiting from the parts and network available to the major manufacturer. This marked the beginning of one of the world's most exciting automotive adventures. The car that had been available with a modest R8 956 cm3 55 hp engine gradually moved upmarket, and a veritable forest of versions became available, culminating in the 127 hp 1600 SC. The A110 built up an outstanding track record, taking part in all the competitions and becoming a fierce rival for many manufacturers, while reigning virtually unchallenged on most circuits. The Alpine A110 was even crowned World Rally Champion in 1971 and 1973. The car's reputation ensured it a great deal of commercial success for its time, and a small carmaker like Alpine, with 7579 units produced from the Dieppe workshops between 1962 and 1977. The Alpine offered for sale is the most powerful civilian version of the legendary A110 series: the 1600 SC. It is powered by a Renault 12 Gordini engine re-bored to 1605 cm3 displacement (type 1600 VD), with 5-speed gearbox and fed by two Weber 45 twin-barrel carburetors, giving it a power output of 127 hp. Capable of reaching 215 km/h, it's an authentic sports car of its time, with no reason to be ashamed of more powerful models that were much heavier than this featherweight, weighing in at just 650 kilos. What's more, it also boasts the A310's double-wishbone rear axle and two much more rigorous shock absorbers than its predecessors. As a result, the 1600 SC is considered the most accomplished of all A110 road cars. Interestingly, this car was owned for many years by Alpine and Renault Sport driver and mechanic Jean-Claude Peray, who carried out a complete mechanical overhaul in 2018. Segmentation, cylinder liners, cylinder head, valves, connecting rods... The entire engine block was rebuilt and all wear parts replaced. The gearbox also benefited from the same care. This car, with 91370 kms on the clock and sold without an up-to-date roadworthiness test less than six months old - the last one dating back to last year being virtually blank - is therefore perfectly functional. All it needs is some bodywork attention, such as paintwork, particularly on the heavily gravelled front end, to restore it to its former glory. The interior, meanwhile, is remarkably well preserved, and features Mod'Plastia bucket seats, in line with those fitted to vintage A110s, as well as an accessory steering wheel. Only 481 examples
