1993 - Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24 - Lot 70
1993 - Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24 French registration Chassis n°WDB1290611F081775 Engine n°104981120224418100 - Technological milestone for an iconic model - 6-cylinder, 24-valve version with automatic gearbox - Good overall condition and just 170,300 kilometers - 2-seater in 4-seater configuration and Gulli accessory wheels The Mercedes SL type R129 was presented at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. It is part of the prestigious SL (light sports car) line from the marque with the star. As such, it had the onerous task of succeeding the R107, produced for over 18 years after the "Pagoda" (W113), which itself achieved a synthesis between the sportiness of the legendary 300 SL and the comfort of its little sister the 190 SL. With such a heritage, Mercedes preferred to place this generation under the sign of continuity, taking up the formula of comfort, safety and power rather than exacerbated sportiness, while at the same time developing the SL in depth, notably technologically. The lines have been modernized, becoming smoother and tauter, for a classic, timeless design that exudes natural presence. On-board technology makes a real leap forward, with ABS as standard, traction control (ASR), pilot-controlled suspension, retractable rollover bar, airbags, electro-hydraulic soft top and optional aluminum hardtop, among others. In terms of engines, the range is wide, and here again the emphasis is on progress towards greater efficiency and enhanced performance. The SL R129 was first offered with a 3-liter, 24-valve, in-line six-cylinder with 231 hp, or a 5-liter V8 developing 326 hp. Then, in 1992, a 395-hp 6-liter V12 completed the range from the top, before the following year's expansion came from the bottom with the introduction of a 193-hp 2.8L six-cylinder, in addition to the replacement of the 300 SL-24 by the SL 320 with the same power but more torque. In 1995, a restyling was carried out on the headlamps, fascias and rocker panels. At the same time, a 5-speed automatic gearbox was introduced, and the interior was slightly restyled. But it was in 1998 that the SL R129 evolved even further, with the reorganization of the engine range to meet new environmental requirements. Other versions, notably AMG versions such as the SL 73, followed, transforming the SL R129 into a truly powerful, high-performance car, although it remained above all sophisticated and safe, in keeping with its hallmark. With its remarkable build quality, the SL R129 generation is representative of Mercedes' status-conscious style and know-how of the 1990s, blending technology and power to the delight of its privileged owners. It was a huge success, with over 200,000 units produced in its twelve-year career. Our Mercedes SL R129 is a 300 SL-24 version, i.e. powered by the 231 hp 3L 24-valve in-line six-cylinder. It was delivered in Germany and put on the road in March 1993. It arrived in France in 2001 and was acquired by its last owner in 2017. This is a well-optioned example, as it features an automatic gearbox, air conditioning, electrically adjustable front seats with memory and heating, and headlamp wipers. In Blue Black metallic (199O) with anthracite leather interior (271A) and matching black soft top, it is as sober as it is elegant. All the more so as the original 8-hole rims have been replaced by "Gulli" rims (Gullideckel by Fuchs) of the same dimensions for added finesse. This 300 SL-24 also offers a four-seat configuration, although administratively it's a two-seater. The car has just under 170,300 kilometers on the clock, and is in satisfactory used condition. It is not free from body defects, notably in the bumpers, the right-hand rear wheel arch and the rocker panels. However, the interior has been well preserved and the soft top is in good condition, both aesthetically and functionally. Mechanically, the car has clearly been serviced and is operational. The six Bosch injectors were changed and the injection system cleaned in 2019, in addition to the fact that it is sold with its technical inspection up to date to September 2024. Reliable, elegant, economical in use and comfortable, this quality 300 SL-24 is an ideal opportunity to enter the world of motorcycle collecting with peace of mind and Mer's standards of excellence.
