1973 - Mercedes-Benz 280 CE - Lot 71
1973 - Mercedes-Benz 280 CE French registration Chassis n°11407212006583 Engine n°11098312027241 - Refined looks, power, robustness and comfort - Beautiful configuration with many original options - Only 3 owners for over 30 years - Followed car in very good condition At the end of the 1960s, Mercedes-Benz had to pull out all the stops to replace the Type 110, as this car was a huge success in the brand's history, selling over 600,000 units. It has to be said that during the glorious 30s, the formula of combining luxury and quality while keeping the price down worked wonders. The success of the W110 made Mercedes a key player in the market, and its successor is set to build on this success. First and foremost, the famous "Heckflosse" fins, reminiscent of large American sedans, were dropped. Instead, Paul Bracq gave the chassis a slender "Ponton" design, typical of the Sixties. Two versions are available: the 6-cylinder W114 only, and the 4 and 5-cylinder W115. These engines follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, being numerous, with different power levels, both petrol and diesel, but always rear-wheel drive. Comfort options multiply with the addition of numerous equipment options. Several body styles are offered: sedan, station wagon and coupé. The latter was equipped with the most powerful 6-cylinder engines, first the 2.5-liter, then the 2.8-liter with twin camshafts. Launched in 1968, the W114/W115 ended its career in 1976 after selling almost 2 million units, making Mercedes-Benz a manufacturer as immense as it was unavoidable. The model presented here is a 280 CE coupé, commissioned in 1973. One of the W114 coupé's main ingenious features is the absence of door pillars, allowing all the windows to be lowered and the exterior to be enjoyed like a cabriolet. Ivory-white in color, it features a bronze velvet interior in superb condition. Unrestored, it stands alone as a testament to the legendary build quality for which its manufacturer is renowned. This coupé benefits from numerous options, including automatic gearbox, electric windows, radio and even air conditioning. The latter was upgraded in 2014. The engine fitted to this car is type 110.983, so it's not its original engine, but this is by no means a major flaw on this car since it's a similar model of the same power, which equipped the 280 SE and SEL type W116. According to the previous owner's notes, it had also been refurbished in the 2000s. Today, this 280 CE boasts 56150 kilometers on its 5-figure odometer, and is in good working order. This beautiful car enjoys a stable history, having known only two owners between 1994 and 2017, since when it has delighted its last owner. Among other reassurances for the future buyer, the ignition was overhauled in 2023 and the roadworthiness test is up to date as of October 2024. So you can look forward to many kilometers at the wheel, without forgetting the charm of this sleek design straddling the 1960s and 1970s.
