1983 - Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL - Lot 72
1983 - Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL French registration Chassis n°WDB1260231A009065 Engine n°11098912049116 - First truly modern S-Class in long version - French car with numerous options - Good overall condition for 231,570 original kilometers - BBS wheels and comfort equipment still up to date - Sold without reserve price WITHOUT RESERVE Mercedes-Benz has not only made a name for itself in the road car segment. Every carmaker needs a prestige flagship, and Mercedes has no intention of neglecting this niche. The type W100 or 600 has made a profound impression on its era, with its prestigious clientele, incomparable build quality, comfort, power and avant-garde options. The spirit of excellence of this jewel of the automobile is echoed in the top-of-the-range versions of the automaker's road-going series. After the highly successful W116 "Sonderklasse", whose 450 SEL was based on the 600's 6.9-liter engine, the successor had to do even better. Especially since the oil crisis has made it difficult to combine prestige, comfort and economy. Italian stylist Bruno Sacco's team had to focus on aerodynamics, and after 6 years of development, the W126 was presented at the 1979 Frankfurt Motor Show. Numerous versions were available, with long or short wheelbases, diesel or petrol engines, and even a coupé variant. The main innovation of this model compared to its predecessors was the multiplication of safety and comfort options. It inaugurates the first standard airbag, the traction control system and standard ABS, all innovations that will later become standard instruments for passenger safety. As for comfort, electric and heated seats, automatic climate control, cruise control and hydropneumatic suspension are just some of the many features introduced by Mercedes and which will equip generations of road cars. The "S-Class" really comes into its own with the W126, and is the most successful generation ever. Launched in France in 1983, our example is a Phase 1 with a 2.8-liter, 6-cylinder, electronically-injected engine producing 185 hp. This is an SEL version with a longer wheelbase, further enhancing comfort. The bodywork is a superb dark blue (904U), combined with a black leather interior (251). The burr walnut woodwork has lost none of its lustre, and the space reserved for rear passengers is breathtaking, especially when compared with current car production. As always with an S-Class, this limousine comes with a host of optional extras, including a sunroof, electric mirrors, windows and seats, as well as automatic climate control, cruise control, headlamp wipers and reading lights. These features are a real pleasure to see in a car that's almost 40 years old. The BBS wheels add an extra sporty touch to this beautiful car. The fuel injection was redone in 2019 and the front tires (Michelin) were replaced in 2021, although the car has only covered around 1,000 kilometers since then. Its original mileage of 231500 kilometers is perfectly in keeping with its condition and build quality - the W126 is highly reputed for its reliability over time. Sold with no reserve price and with its roadworthiness test up to date as of September 2024, this luxury Mercedes is undeniably an excellent opportunity to treat yourself to a car as luxurious as it is representative of its era.
