Designed to rival the best European sports cars of the 1960s, the Ferrari 206 and 246 GT occupy a singular place in the brand's history. Developed and produced by Ferrari with Scaglietti, they were launched under the Dino name, created in 1964. This was a tribute to Alfredino Ferrari, Enzo's son, who died prematurely in 1956 and was behind the V6 engine project. More affordable than traditional Ferraris, these models enabled the brand to attract a new clientele while retaining a strong link with racing.
Designed from the outset to house a V6 engine in a central rear position, the Dino heralded a new technical era for Ferrari, validating a concept taken directly from motor racing: placing the engine just behind the driver to optimize weight distribution. This choice gave the car healthy, balanced and particularly efficient roadholding, close to that of a real racing car despite its Grand Touring name.
The sculptural lines of the Dino, designed by Pininfarina, were first presented at the 1965 Paris Motor Show. The model was officially launched in 1967 as the Dino 206 GT, before evolving into the 246 GT in 1969. The latter was powered by a 2,418 cm³, transversely mounted, wet-sump V6 with four overhead camshafts, fed by three Weber twin-barrel carburetors and electronic ignition. Producing 195 hp, this engine, derived directly from racing, is both powerful and pleasant to use.
Coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox, the Dino 246 reached speeds of up to 240 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 7 seconds, offering performance that rivaled or even surpassed that of the Porsche 911 S of the time, thanks to a more modern chassis. Four-wheel independent suspension and ventilated disc brakes further enhance its dynamic efficiency.
Over the course of its career, the Dino 246 would have three successive series - L, M and E - the latter appearing in 1971. In 1972, Ferrari also introduced the GTS version with removable roof, adding the pleasure of open-air driving. Production of the Dino 246 came to an end in 1974, after just 3,761 examples of all versions had been produced, sealing the legend of this emblematic model once and for all. Despite its limited production run, the Dino 246 left an indelible mark. Much more than a collector's car, it embodies a unique blend of sportiness, elegance and emotion, at the crossroads of history, competition and automotive pleasure.
The Dino we present is a magnificent 246 GT, from the second series of the model, one of the 506 cars produced known as tipo M.
It's also one of the very few Dino 246s delivered new to Brazil, where only 29 examples have been delivered, according to model specialist Matthias Bartz. According to his information, our Dino was delivered there by driver Piero Vallarino Gancia, who was an important figure in Brazilian motor sport, having become a Ferrari importer with his Jolly Automóveis group, which also distributed Alfa Romeo and Lamborghini.
According to Matthias Bartz, this Dino was originally painted in Rosso Bordeaux with a beige interior. However, it was quickly repainted in its emblematic Rosso Corsa hue and the interior redone in black leather, since when it was imported into France in 1991 at around 81,000 km, it was already in its current color configuration.
Acquired by its current owner the same year at auction, it has always been used and regularly serviced, mainly by Etablissements Pozzi. Among the many repairs carried out on the car are the seats (1991), the engine (2008), the electrical system (2014) and the brakes (2016). Finally, it has 4 recent Michelin XWX tires (20
