Officially presented in 1992, the Ferrari 456 GT marks a milestone in the history of Ferrari. Its development began in 1989 and, after several years of fine-tuning, resulted in an entirely new large GT. It paved the way for the 550 Maranello, and also symbolized Ferrari's return to traditional, refined architecture: the 2+2 coupé with front-mounted V12 engine, a configuration the brand had not offered since the demise of the 412 in 1989.
Its design, once again by Pininfarina, is distinguished by a sober, timeless elegance, often hailed as one of Ferrari's most balanced stylistic successes. Some even consider it one of the most beautiful GTs ever produced at Maranello.
Under its long hood is a 48-valve, four-overhead-camshaft, atmospheric V12 of almost 5.5 liters (5,474 cm³), producing 442 hp and combining smoothness and performance at high revs. Combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 456 GT achieves a top speed of 309 km/h, making it one of the few 4-seaters to exceed 300 km/h. From 0 to 100 km/h takes around 5.3 seconds. Weighing in at just under 1,690 kg, the power-to-weight ratio is around 3.8 kg/hp, confirming the car's positioning as a fast but comfortable GT.
This orientation does not, however, confine the Ferrari 456 GT to a simple touring car. It has a real sporting temperament, part of the Ferrari DNA. Its expressive V12, overall balance and first-rate performance make it a true sports car capable of long, high-speed drives, while offering sensations worthy of the brand.
Built on a tubular steel chassis, it features an aluminum body to optimize rigidity and weight.
A 4-speed automatic gearbox is also available as an option, giving rise to the GTA version, designed to broaden its clientele towards easier day-to-day use.
Finally, the 456 GT incorporates modern safety equipment for its time, such as ABS and ASR traction control.
A truly versatile grand tourer, it combines high performance, driving comfort and refinement, while retaining a distinctive Ferrari identity. Even today, it is often seen as a future classic, sought after for its balance of elegance, power and everyday practicality.
