Developed amid intensifying competition from French and Italian manufacturers in the late 1980s, it featured a mechanical solution that was rare for the time: the “G” volumetric supercharger, named for the spiral shape of its rotor. Paired with the famous 1.8-liter, 8-valve four-cylinder engine, this system enables the Golf G60 to produce 160 ch and, above all, exceptionally generous torque, delivering high-level acceleration and excellent responsiveness across the entire rev range, without the lag characteristic of turbocharged engines of that era.
