Presented at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT replaced the Giulietta, which had been a great commercial success. The same was true of the Giulia, whose career, with its many versions, lasted more than 15 years. The beauty of its lines is due to the pencil stroke of a talented designer, barely 21, who had just joined Bertone: Giorgetto Giugiaro. This was one of his first creations. The coupé was daring for its time, with its "Bialbero" powertrain at the cutting edge of technology. The engine block is made entirely of aluminum and features two overhead camshafts.
Initially offered with a 1600 engine on the Giulia Sprint GT, a smaller 1300-engined "Junior" version of the Giulia Bertone coupé appeared in 1966. The 1600 version was then called Giulia Sprint GT Veloce. Several evolutions followed, each more powerful and better finished. In 1968, the new GT Veloce (replacing the 1600) was presented at the Brussels Motor Show. The Giulia name disappeared, but the spirit of the car remained. The range was based on two engines: the 1300 Junior and the 1750 GT Veloce.
For the latter, the front end was completely redesigned, with a grille equipped with 4 headlamps and the disappearance of the "letterbox" air intake. The engine develops 118 hp. While performance is little better than that of the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, the 1750 retains its racy temperament while being much more supple and therefore pleasant to drive. It's recognizable by the Quadrifoglio embellishments on the rear quarter panels, reserved for the top-of-the-range Alfa versions of the time. The interior is also more flattering, with a new dashboard featuring two large chrome-ringed meters and wood veneers that blend perfectly with the tulip-shaped steering wheel and gearshift knob, also in wood. A second series appeared in 1969, with a few improvements (suspended pedals, dual braking circuit) and aesthetic changes (refined bumpers with vertical bumpers, turn indicators integrated into the front apron and simplified seat design), before being replaced by a new version equipped with a 2-liter engine, the 2000 GT Veloce, in 1971.
Also known as the Giulia 2000 GTV, this model took the essentials of the 1750 GT Series 2 and added a few styling details, including a front grille with 8 horizontal bars, a rear quarter medallion and elongated taillights incorporating reversing lights. The interior is entirely new, with specific upholstery and instrumentation. Mechanically, the stroke and bore of the 1750 engine have been increased to 1962 cm3, which, when fed by two Solex or Dell'Orto twin-barrel carburetors, produces 132 horsepower. More torquey, supple at low revs and still very comfortable and sonorous at higher revs, this engine makes the 2000 version the most versatile. It's no less sporty for all that, thanks in particular to its self-locking axle fitted as standard and to its weight, which remains under a ton. It also features disc brakes, and its handsome 14-inch Campagnolo alloy wheels give it a Latin charm.
As the ultimate evolution of the famous Bertone coupé, the 2000 GTV is the perfect synthesis of Italian motoring and an Alfa Romeo classic.
Our Alfa Romeo coupé Bertone is a 2000 GT Veloce, launched on October 20, 1975. It was delivered to its first owner by Alfa Romeo's Paris branch in the 8th arrondissement, as evidenced by the importer's plate still present in the engine compartment.
