1954 - Citroën 2CV AZ - Lot 46
1954 - Citroën 2CV AZ French registration Chassis n°153633 Engine n°AZM 0066022856 Bodywork n°AZBZ3243 - Popular French automotive icon - Popular AZ version with 16 hp AZM engine - Only two owners since new - Restored between 2017 and 2019, with supporting invoices A symbol of the French automobile, the 2CV is a particularly endearing car, and its long career can testify to that. The genesis of this venerable popular car is now the stuff of legend. Its prototypes were hidden in an attic during the Occupation. Once the war was over, studies resumed to take account of the scarcity of certain materials, and the 2-hp was presented to the public in 1948 at the Paris Motor Show. Enthusiasm was not immediate, however, as the car's extreme economy and design were criticized: no door lock, no fuel gauge, only one color... The car was clearly aimed at a rural audience. Particularly as certain materials, such as steel, were not so easy to find in the late '40s, resulting in delivery delays. The reputation of the "ugly duckling" was established. Nonetheless, Citroën believed in its concept and, in the end, orders continued to flow in. It must be said that the decision to prioritize deliveries to country doctors and priests cleverly helped spread the word about this strange, high-set car: everyone wanted the "two-legged one"! A van was even presented in 1951, and was officially selected by the postal service to deliver mail. However, the 2 CV was still very rustic and uncomfortable. Improvements came with the new AZ version, featuring a 425 cm3, 12 hp engine, enabling the little car to cruise at 70 km/h. A "Luxe" version was even launched in 1956. This made the car better suited to urban traffic. It was a real success, and the car was produced for almost 10 years. However, this was only the beginning of a constant evolution that lasted until 1990, with almost 5 million units produced. Our little 2CV is an AZ version, launched on December 1, 1954. Delivered new in the Drôme region of France, it remained there until its acquisition in 2017 by its last owner, when it was still registered XXX BB 26. It is therefore second-hand. It underwent a general overhaul, including bodywork, between 2017 and 2018, and has hardly been driven since. So a minor service will be in order for this friendly 2CV, sold without an up-to-date MOT and with just over 83490 kms on its Veglia odometer. The engine is a 16 hp AZM, according to the nameplate, with a cubic capacity in keeping with its type, albeit a little more powerful and later than the original AZ series. It still sports the traditional light-gray color (AC 132), combined with green and gray-tinted tartan viscose fabric upholstery. The upholstery is new in 2018, and the carpets and soft top were replaced in 2019. The bumpers have also been replaced by new ones. However, some accessories such as the lights, mirrors, grille and instrumentation have been preserved, giving this 2CV a certain authenticity. The car also retains its service manual, which will be delivered with the car, together with a date certificate and a small file of invoices for the work carried out. The 2 CV is an icon with a fascinating history, appearing in countless films and advertisements, but above all it's a time-travelling machine, transporting us back to rural France in the 1950s. With its high suspension and small, distinctive-sounding engine, it's also fun to drive. Our AZ version, which has been perfected from the very first while retaining a look very close to the most sought-after, has been well restored without losing any of its charm. Now it's ready to hit the road!
