Here's a car that needs no introduction. It was originally designed in the late 1950s by the British Motor Corporation on the basis of a project by Alec Issigonis, who had no idea of the imprint he would leave on Western culture. Fully rooted in the pop movement of which it would become the iconic car, the Mini would become one of the symbols of the swinging sixties, alongside the Beatles, pop-rock and miniskirts. Stars snapped it up, it appeared in countless British films and the Mini became the automotive synonym for cool. The car was exported everywhere, and versions multiplied. It's a real phenomenon!
While the first Minis were powered by a modest 4-cylinder engine, the model was later given a number of clearly sport-oriented versions. Thus was born the myth of the Cooper, named after the engineer who revealed its true sporting potential. Faced with the growing success of racers, BMC pushed the little car's design to the limit, and the Cooper S won its first Monte Carlo Rally in 1964.
The Mini's career enjoyed exceptional longevity and, after being produced by several manufacturers such as Morris and Austin, Mini became its own brand in 1969. In 1971, the agreements between British Leyland and John Cooper came to an end, and production of the Cooper ceased. It did not reappear until 1990. Following BMW's acquisition of Mini in 1994, the last "classic" Mini was marketed from 1997 to 2000.
The first "modern" Mini of the BMW era appeared in 2001. The success story continues unabated. Several generations follow (R50 from 2001 to 2007, R56 from 2007 to 2014 and F55 from 2014 to 2024), and an entire range is developed with derivatives (convertible, estate, sedan, 4X4, coupé...) of the original version. As has always been the case since its inception, Mini also continues to be the subject of numerous special series and collaborations, confirming its status as an iconic car. And with the latest generation just out, there's no end in sight to the Mini's successful, cultural career.
So it was only natural that a Mini was chosen, when the idea of an Art Car by rising Lyon artist Simon Poter (1983) was born in 2023.
Poter trained in the applied arts at the Beaux-Arts de Lyon, during which he forged his technique and asserted the singularity of his plastic language, through structural compositions of geometric shapes and motifs, of different scales and in movement, with vibrant colors. Her ability to express herself in all media enables her to take part in a wide range of projects.
What's more, its pop, acidic style, exploring the dynamic power of a limited palette of colors, is completely in tune with the Mini image, both representative of the pop movement and a rare brand with extraordinary power of attraction through a single model, declined around a strong identity.
What's more, the Mini chosen, in this case a 2017 5-door sedan of the penultimate generation (F55), is a special Shoredicth edition, named after the trendy district of London's capital, with its brick facades covered in "Street Art", whose atmosphere matches Simon Poter's artistic personality. This Mini Art Car is a perfectly coherent work of art.
Graffiti artist Simon Poter's graphic composition using acrylic spray paint has awakened the Mini's Pepper White color, one of three available for this special series. It's now unique, with bodywork that's colorful without being ostentatious, giving it a distinctive presence.
This "pepsy" look is complemented by a very high level of equipment, since as a Shoreditch special series, this Mini comes with a wealth of features. This includes Black Pearl fabric and imitation leather upholstery with sports seats, white turn indicators, special badges, black alloy wheels, electric panoramic sunroof, Bluetooth, beacon and more.
